Lord Strathcona Medal

  • Ref CJCR Grp O 5027-4.

  • Determined by the Staff, submission due 31 Mar

  • Presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review by the Reviewing Officer after a short historical brief of the medal as it is written in Appendix 1 of the CATO.

  • One recipient nominated only.

  • Minimum Bronze Level of the cadet fitness assessment, preferably Gold or higher.

  • Minimum level 3 qualified.

  • Minimum three years in the cadet program.

  • Attended at least one summer training course for three-week duration.

  • Minimum 50% attendance in unit scheduled activities.

  • Minimum 75% attendance in local training at LHQ.

  • No Honourable mentions appointed.

  • A recipient can earn the award only once.

  • Regarded by peers and supervisors as exemplifying the model cadet.

Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence

  • Ref CATO 13-16 Annex E.

  • Determined by the Staff.  Submission to the Royal Canadian Legion by 30 Mar.

  • Co-operation with peers & subordinates.

  • Comradeship.

  • Promoting goodwill & morale in Squadron.

  • Aiding in development of Squadron identity.

  • Involvement in local community.

  • Presented at the Annual Review by member of Branch 82 of the RCL.

  • One recipient nominated only.

  • No Honourable Mentions appointed.

  • A recipient can earn the RCLME only once and not be awarded the Lord Strathcona Medal in the same training year.

Royal Canadian Air Cadet Service Medal

  • 4 calendar years of service with Air Cadets.

  • No serious service infractions.

  • Determined by the AdmO.

  • Presented at the Annual Review by the Sponsoring Committee Chairperson.

  • No Honourable Mentions.


DRESS, DEPORTMENT & CONDUCT AWARDS

Flying Officer George Beck, RCAF - Sword of Distinction

  • Determined by the Staff.

  • Exceptional standards of dress and deportment.

  • Superior program knowledge as a resource to peers and subordinates.

  • Unwavering dedication to the unit.

  • Presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review by the CO.

  • Must hold the rank of FSgt or above.

  • Minimum of 75% attendance.

  • Two recipients may be nominated in exceptional circumstances.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

WOII Ani Sawant Memorial Award for the Best First Year Cadet

  • Determined by the staff with input from the Warrant Officers.

  • Presented at the Annual Review by the Sawant family.

  • Completed Level Training without difficulty.

  • Minimum 75% attendance.

  • Two recipients may be nominated in exceptional circumstances.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

Best Dressed Cadet

  • Must hold the rank of Cpl or below.

  • Acknowledging those cadets who have consistently demonstrated superior standards on CO’s Inspection(s).

  • Recognizing cadets for their proper conduct and maturity.

  • Minimum 75% attendance.

  • Determined by the Staff with input from the Warrant Officers.

  • Two recipients may be nominated in exceptional circumstances.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

  • A recipient can earn the award only once.

OCdt Seth Sundar Memorial Award for the Most Proficient Junior NCO

  • Cpl, FCpl, and Sgt are eligible for this award.

  • Determined by the staff with input from the Warrant Officers.

  • Minimum 75% attendance.

  • Two recipients may be nominated in exceptional circumstances.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

 

The Mahood Trophy

  • Determined by the Senior NCOs of the Squadron (Warrants, with no input from the Staff).

  • Minimum 75% attendance.

  • Presented at the Annual Review by the Squadron Warrant Officer (usually WOI).

  • Two recipients may be nominated in exceptional circumstances.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.


BAND AWARDS

Major R. G. Beck Award

  • Determined by the band staff.

  • Presented at the Annual Review by Major R.G. Beck, CD (Ret’d).

  • Two recipients may be nominated in exceptional circumstances.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

Major W. Richardson Drum Major Award
(Presented prior to ACR)

  • Presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review by Major W. Richardson CD (Ret’d), Major G. Johnson CD if present, or the Band Officer.

Stewarts’ Most Improved Band Member Award

  • To be determined by the Band Staff.

  • Presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review by the Stewarts if present, or by the Band Officer or their assistant.

  • Can be presented to any band member only once.


AVIATION AWARDS

James Floyd Award

  • Determined by the squadron Ground School Instructors.

  • Presented at Annual Ceremonial Review by a member of the Aviation Heritage Foundation if present, or a squadron Ground School Instructor.

  • One recipient may be nominated.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

Jan Zurakowski Award

  • Determined by the squadron Ground School Instructors.

  • Presented at Annual Ceremonial Review by a member of the Aviation Heritage Foundation if present, or by a squadron Ground School Instructor.

  • One recipient may be nominated.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.


OTHER AWARDS

Community Service Award

  • Determined by Squadron Community hours log (AdmO).

  • Presented at the Annual Review by Mrs. L. Jennings if present or Sponsoring Committee Chairperson.

  • Two recipients may be nominated.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

The Phoenix Award for the Top Cadet Instructor

  • To be determined by the Training Staff.

  • Presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review by Major G. Mitchell if present or by the TrgO.

  • Two recipients may be nominated.

  • One Honourable Mention may be appointed.

Major G. Meissner Pace Stick Award
(Presented prior to ACR)

  • Presented at the Annual Ceremonial Review by Major G. Meissner (Ret’d) if present, or by a former Warrant Officer 1st Class of the squadron. 


NOTES:

  1. “Deportment” refers to the continuing adherence to the proper code of behaviour with an eye for military presence or bearing.

  2. All awards nominations should be determined by the second week of April in order to allow for engraving etc. (Aside from the Lord Strathcona, RCL medal, due earlier).

  3. Each Cadet receives a keeper trophy with the exception of:

  • The model club (model or cash prize),

  • Royal Canadian Air Cadet Service Medal,

  • Royal Canadian Legion Medal, and

  • The Lord Strathcona Medal.

4. In order to preserve the awards from further damage award winning cadets are not permitted to take the main Annual Award home. Award winners are permitted to take home:

  • Keeper Awards.

  • Medals.

5. “Staff” includes Squadron Officers, Civilian Instructors, Civilian Volunteers, and Sponsoring Body members.
